Juicy issues for O's

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - The Orioles wrapped up their workout portion of spring training yesterday with the same number of questions that existed when pitchers and catchers arrived two weeks ago.

They haven't settled on a fifth starter or a starting shortstop. They have vacancies in the bullpen and on the bench. All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts still could be traded, and one of their best pitchers, Adam Loewen, still needs to prove that he has recovered from serious elbow surgery and is ready to become a middle-of-the-rotation starter.

The Orioles will play 29 Grapefruit League games, starting today when they open their exhibition season against the Florida Marlins at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. Here are some issues that will need to be addressed during that time:

TXT-U service doesn't alert all

He said most of the complaints are from T-Mobile users.

Wolter said three individuals' cases are still pending, and "some of them possibly will not be resolved."

He said he didn't know the specifics of these cases.

Keen said he thinks the University should identify students who think they're set up to receive the messages but aren't.

"That's the right thing to do, to make sure everyone gets the text messages," he said. "They created them to keep people informed, because they wanted to get people to know what's going on, and obviously it's not doing that for everyone." .

Canada: Government panel urges increased Canadian role in Afghan war

The panel further recommends that the Canadian government delay a promised House of Commons vote on extending the CAF mission in Afghanistan until after a NATO meeting in Bucharest in early April.

Harper can be expected to use Manley’s report to pressure NATO countries—especially France, Germany and Italy—to lift restrictions on the use of their troops in combat missions, with the claim that an increased willingness on the part of Canada’s NATO partners to shoulder the fighting in Afghanistan is necessary to maintain public support for the pivotal CAF deployment in Kandahar.

At the same time the panel’s condition is loosely enough worded that were the US to agree to deploy to Kandahar some of the 3,200 additional troops it recently announced it is sending to Afghanistan, the Harper government could argue it has been fulfilled.

Popular bar closing doors

We hope to acquire that land sometime in the near future," Ball said. "If we do acquire it, we would plant some trees and grass and shrubs. There could possibly be other uses later, but initially our plans would include landscaping."Long, who also owns Huddle House restaurants in Greenwood, Saluda, McCormick and Seneca, said the time was right to sell his sports bar."Greenwood has changed," Long said. "There's no telling how many restaurants have opened since we opened. With the office burning down next door and us clearing that lot, it seemed like the right time. A businessman in town made us an offer, and he has an agreement with Lander."We couldn't come up with a price with Lander. Then (the businessman) came in and made a good offer on both pieces of property."Long said it has been a strenuous and sad time as he prepares to close the business.

'Weightless Flights' Kick Off At Moffett

The company that offers "weightless flights" at Moffett Field told NBC11 Friday that four seats opened up for this weekend's missions.

Zero Gravity Corp. out of Las Vegas charges $3,500 per person per flight. It's not clear if they got any takers.

Corporation officials said additional flights will be scheduled later this year.

An agreement between NASA's Ames and ZERO-G Corp. allows the company to park its aircraft on the Silicon Valley airfield while flight operations are being conducted and during scheduled flights. .

Negro League baseball player finally gets time to shine

Joe Scott's heroes were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He once played in an all-star game against Joe DiMaggio, but he never lived the dream of playing in the major leagues as a teammate to baseball's idols.

Scott had at least two strikes against him. He was black, and he was short. At 5-7 and 162 pounds, he was playing in an all-star game in Canada once when a recruiter for the New York Yankees scouted him.

B-schools may soon lose monopoly over strategic management lessons

KOLKATA: He is a professor and a gentleman. In a career spanning over two decades with leading companies and top B-schools including IIM Calcutta (IIM-C), he has taught and consulted top corporates on strategic management. But Ranjan Das is now about to change course.

He plans to take the concept of strategic management out of the elitist confines of B-schools into every corner of the country. On a sabbatical from IIM-C since November 2007, he has set up The Strategy Academy (TSA) — a first-of-its-kind initiative.

“All I can say is I have dared to dream. This is an experiment, which is close to my heart and I would like to devote two-to-three years on this. I am ready to put my own money into this venture. I have invested my own funds, including PF money into this," Mr Das told ET.

Bush's Blackwater, an armed and deadly mercenary Christian army

Like most of you I knew Blackwater was a military contractor with personnel in Iraq. I knew they also sent armed personnel to police the street of New Orleans after Katrina. But I did some research after a private pilot friend sent me a series of photographs he recently took flying over their 6,000 acre North Carolina training site (see exclusive enlarged high resolution pictures here, my friend took them not knowing whether there might be dire consequenses flying so close to their facility). Once I did a little reading I was horrified at the secret army Bush has at his beck and call.

For starters, I suggest readers take a few minutes and at least view this discussion, if not read the entire article from The Nation by Jeremy Scahill, the author of a new book, "Blackwater, The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army".

Universal: We're staying with HD DVD

Microsoft is now offering high-def downloads via its XBox 360 gaming console while Apple just added them to its Apple TV device. Additionally, Netflix and several other companies are planning to offer HD download services. But ZDNet's technical director says the companies are just using "marketing" techniques to make it sound like the downloads are really HD. "Marketing will push the nicer sounding “720p" aspect of the video but they don't tell you it's way too compressed to offer good video fidelity. Blu-ray has a maximum bit-rate of 40 mbps while HD DVD offers 28 mbps. Over the air broadcasts can be up to 24 mbps though they're typically between 16 to 20 mbps," he says. Ou adds: "Under most normal circumstances, the low bit-rate 720p so-called 'HD' video will be inferior though many companies are betting that consumers won't know any better.
