| Witness: Shooting victim unarmed
Swingle said in order for a law enforcement officer to be justified in using deadly force, he must act under the reasonable belief such action is necessary to protect his own life and safety and that of others. The only role of the prosecutor during an inquest is to "have the truth come out," Swingle said. Swingle said that the public nature of an inquest in this type of case can serve to quell speculation that anything is being swept under rug because the person in question is a law enforcement officer. According to Department of Corrections policy concerning fugitive apprehension agents, deadly force may not be used to make an arrest or to prevent escape unless there is reasonable belief that the suspect is attempting to escape by using a deadly weapon, or may otherwise endanger life or inflict serious physical injury unless immediately apprehended.
Tatas, Briley in business jet venture
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: After circling around the aviation business for almost a decade, the Tata group, which pioneered aviation in India, took the plunge on Tuesday. (In Video) The steel-to-salt conglomerate has picked up a `significant stake' in Bjets—a business jet operator that plans to start aircraft charter and fractional ownership programmes. Bjets announced an order for 50 biz-jets, largely Cessna Citation CJ2s and Hawker Xps, worth about Rs 2,400 crore. The Singapore-based Briley Group is the majority shareholder in Bjets with Indian Hotels. The exact shareholding has not been disclosed. The business aircraft charter market in India is fragmented, with no single large player that offers corporates a mixed fleet of various aircraft types. Though the number of business jets being bought has grown exponentially in the past few years, most are being brought in by companies for their own use.
87th Tour de France - Grand Tour
Drama was rife on the final climb of the 2000 Tour De France, the Col de Joux-Plane today, as Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong (USPS) had a bad case of the bonk with 22km to go, as the steep climb began. He was dropped by Virenque and a resurgent Jan Ullrich, while Richard Virenque (Polti), warmed by the summer sun, charged ahead to win the stage. Armstrong was visibly in trouble as the tough ascent started; his usually impeccable form had deteriorated to swaying shoulders and bobbing head as the tough Texan struggled to stay in contact with the front of the race. So why did Armstrong crack? "The problem was a bonk; I didn't eat enough and on the last climb I had no energy...", said Lance just after the stage finish. As the race went on and on across winding mountain roads, the race situation became ever more difficult for USPS to get bidons up to Lance, Kevin and Tyler.
Girls Get Geekier
Any time I come across software developers or visit an IT business, one thing immediately strikes me – where are the women? For all the talk of girl geeks, computing - and technology more generally - is still a very male-dominated business. Even a few months back at a meeting of would-be Facebook application developers – a very young crowd - there must have been ten men for every woman. But that could be about to change. A new survey out today from a major supermarket (no, I'm not going to name them – but the research looks reasonably sound) suggests that girls may now be better at some computing tasks than boys. The survey of more than a thousand 7-16 year olds found that girls were more likely to know how to create a word document, put a profile on a social network or upload a video onto YouTube.
